How to Get Rid of Wasps & Yellowjackets

Wasps earn their reputation. Paper wasps and yellowjackets both sting more than once, and both turn aggressive around the nest, especially in late summer when the colony peaks. Most of the wasp traffic around a house comes down to a few predictable spots, and treating those spots is exactly what the kit is built for.

How to identify them

Paper wasps are slender, close to an inch long, reddish-brown with yellow markings, and they hang open, umbrella-shaped nests with visible cells. Yellowjackets are shorter and stockier, about half an inch, with bright yellow and black bands, and they are the ones crashing your cookout and diving into a soda can. Yellowjackets are the more aggressive of the two.

Where they hide

Paper wasps build under eaves, porch ceilings, soffits, deck railings, and light fixtures, anywhere covered but open. Yellowjackets nest out of sight, in wall voids, attics, and often underground in old burrows or along the foundation, which is what makes them easy to disturb by accident.

Why it matters

Unlike a bee, a wasp can sting more than once, and a disturbed nest can send out many at a time. That makes nests near doors, decks, eaves, and play areas a real hazard, especially for anyone allergic. Knocking a nest down without treating it first usually makes things worse, since the colony regroups quickly.

The fix

How to get rid of them

Treat the places wasps build and travel, the eaves, soffits, window and door frames, and the perimeter of the house, so foragers hit the product and new nests have a harder time taking hold. Knock down small, exposed paper-wasp nests in the evening when the colony is calm. One honest caution: a large or hidden yellowjacket nest, especially one in a wall or in the ground, is a real sting risk, so treat those carefully from a distance or leave them to a pro.
